What do you do to speed up your site perfomance?
Obviously there are a few methods to make pages faster. Which of them do you use?
Now I wouldn’t know how to concatenate files, but I use CodeKit to optimize images (so proud of this;).
Also I didn’t know how to gzip my files. But just yesterday I heard that you could just through in the .htaccess file from the HTML5 Boilerplate on to your server (Apache) and your assets get automatically compressed before your server sends your files out to the browser. This should speed things up significantly.
So I wanted to try it out. But I couldn't find the .htaccess file in my download. Because it is invisible on a Mac! For that you can use Tinker Tool and make hidden files visible in the finder.
Unfortunatly my hosting provider doesn’t allow to much htaccess things, so I had to delete everything except the part that deals with the compression. That is maybe a good idea anyhow, if you don't know what that other code does.
But how do you check if your stuff got gzipped?
Afterwards you get the result and suggestions what you should do to optimize page load. The first thing is gzipping. In my example I should gzip one item, meaning that every other gzippable items were gzipped.
I should also remove 485 unused css rules…
Unfortunatly my sites are so small, that gzipping only gained me milliseconds in page load. But I imagine, if you have larger sites with a lot of CSS and JS it would make a significant difference.
And it is really easy. Just put that htaccess file with the compression part on your server and there you go.
